Reading the, it reminded me of an older Apple program, a game called Strategic Conquest. Anyone remember that?:D I played it on a Mac Plus, the all-in-one model with the tiny screen built onto the computer itself, black-and-white (though I think they later came in color).
And this game is essentially Warcraft II for the 1980s. It randomly generated a world and stuck you on a continent, and you had to take over the world.

The latest version (now colorized) is actually still available, but only for Mac. Any Mac should be able to run it (specific requirements on the website) since it's so old. It's not OS X native, but the page says it should run fine in Classic mode. $24.95 is a little steep for an old game, but if it were for the PC, I'd seriously consider getting it, just because.
Pretty much for a lot of the same reasons Warcraft II is. Another classic game I played on that Mac Plus was 'The Uninvited'. That one's a bit more popular, and was ported to the NES, among other platforms. But I seem to remember, this one scene.
You're in a hallway and there's a woman with her back to you. If you do anything but go up the stairs, or try to interact with her, she turns around and it's a ghost.
It looks silly on the NES port (played it with an emulator - good luck finding the cart), but I seem to remember it being scary as hell on the original Mac version. Gave me nightmares for a while, anyway. The game itself is like the more popular Shadowgate. Essentially the game genre that spawned MYST and 13th Guest a decade later.
You move through environments, but there's only one or two places you can stand in each room, and you have a set view, and you can manipulate the environment. In these older titles, through commands.
