All you have to do is move the mails to another folder (Test) and then click on “Click here to view more on Microsoft Exchange” which will show the unread mails saved on server. Select those unread email and mark as read.

I apologize if this has been asked and answered, but the only relevant items I could find were pertaining to Outlook for Mac 2011 and I don't think the solutions are the same. I'm having an issue where Outlook 2016 is showing me that I have 2 unread messages when I in fact have one 1 unread message. I've confirmed that I have no sub-folders with any unread messages and have displayed only my unread messages and there is only the 1. I've even right clicked on the Inbox and chosen 'mark all as read', in which case the 1 actual message becomes read leaving me with 1 phantom unread message. I've since marked my other message as unread again as I want to leave it that way for now.
So I'm a back to 2 unread messages even though there is in reality only 1. We're connected to an Exchange server in the officer here, so IT had me sign on to a Windows machine and open Outlook there to see if there was something wrong at the Exchange level but the Exchange server correctly lists me as having only 1 unread message. So, I know the problem is on the Mac, but I have no idea how to solve it and neither does our IT department (I'm the only Mac user in the company so their Mac knowledge is limited). The fixes I've found with online searches all pertain to Outlook for Mac 2011 and seem to want to recreat an 'Identity' but I assume the same fix won't work in this case as holding option while loading Outlook doesn't seem to do anything. Perhaps I'm doing something wrong?
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Chris.

The Inbox shows in parenthesis (9). However, opening up the Inbox shows a blank page, or only one or two messages, but certainly not nine. Why does it show more unread items than there are actually there?
This can happen for two main reasons:. You have a filter applied to your view. You are not allowed to see private items in a shared mailbox.
The first scenario is easy to recover from but for the second scenario you’ll need the cooperation of the mailbox owner. You have a filter applied to your view In most cases you’ll also see the remark “Filter Applied” in the Status Bar in the left bottom corner. Switching to the Messages view or resetting the Messages view will show all messages again.
